I have been severely lacking in the craftiness department lately, but I find that I am the most happy when I have the chance to make things no matter how small or quick they are. There is something so therapeutic about the stroke of the brush, the whir of the sewing machine or the feel of dough and flour between your fingers. I also love when these crafts make life a little easier and pretty to look at. And so here is my little tutorial. I am sorry I can not provide a link to the drawer unit, but I am sure you guys are great at finding solutions and adapting things for your own use if you can't find one. Some other websites that may have them are stacks and stacks and the containerstore.
Here is another use for the punched chalkboard labels
Here is the tutorial:
Things like art supplies can be a difficult thing to organize. Fortunately I was able to find 2 unfinished drawer units for very cheap at the thrift store and Ikea. You may have to do some searching for these. They are not posted on the ikea website. I was a little tired of their plainness and their lack of labeling capabilities. I took pictures during the process. It is not really that hard. I just used decoupage glue and stampin' up designer series paper. I love the chalkboard vinyl because it allows me to label things and it is reposition-able. Here are the ingredients you will need to make this project:
Botanical Gazette paper I love the vintage look of this paper
Mod Podge or homemade decoupage paste
drawer unit- I found mine at the thrift store but Ikea also used to sell them.
Decoupage glue recipe:
mix 1 part water with 2 parts white glue. Elmer's type school glue is fine.
Step 1) trace the front of the drawer on to a piece of white paper or some clear template plastic so you can see where your images will be. Use your craft knife and cutting mat for best results.
Step 2) Use your template to cut out your paper drawer fronts from the designer paper of your choice. The nice thing about these drawer units is that the front and back are the same so you could make one side in one design and use different paper on the other side. That way you can change the look when you want.
Step 3) once the paper is cut, and before you apply the paper to the front of the drawer make sure that the paper is cut correctly by putting it on the front of the drawer to see if anything needs to be adjusted.
Step 4) Paint the front with the glue mixture
Step 5) apply the paper and the apply a coat of the glue mixture over the top of the paper making sure that the edges are secure and there are no air bubbles.
Step 6) Let them dry and apply 2 more coats of the glue, letting each coat dry in between. You can also use clear sealer to make them glossy.
Step 7) Punch out your chalkboard vinyl and apply to the drawer fronts once they are dry
Step 8) write on the vinyl with chalk or chalk ink markers. I like to use chalk ink markers because they don't smudge and can be removed with a slightly damp rag.
Enjoy your new organized stuff!
